Q. What do I need to start making bead jewelry?

To get started, you'll need three basics:

  • Beads – Choose from seed beads, crystal beads, or our starter kit assortments.
  • Stringing material – Elastic cord for beginners, or beading wire for more structured designs.
  • Clasps & findings – Lobster clasps, jump rings, and crimp beads to finish your piece.

Q. What's the difference between elastic cord and beading wire?

Elastic cord is stretchy, easy to knot, and requires no clasp — great for bracelets and first-time makers.
Beading wire is stronger and more durable, ideal for necklaces and designs that need a clasp. It requires crimp beads to secure the ends.

Q. Do I need special tools?

For elastic cord projects, you only need scissors. For beading wire projects, we recommend:

  • Round-nose pliers – for making loops
  • Flat-nose pliers – for opening/closing jump rings
  • Crimping pliers – for securing crimp beads
  • Wire cutters – for trimming wire cleanly

Q. How do I finish a bracelet with elastic cord?

String your beads, then tie a surgeon's knot (double overhand knot) to secure the ends. Pull tight, add a drop of jewelry glue, and trim the excess cord once dry. Slide the knot inside a bead to hide it.

Q. How do I use crimp beads?

Thread the wire through the crimp bead, through the clasp loop, and back through the crimp bead. Leave a small loop, then squeeze the crimp bead flat with crimping pliers. Trim the tail wire close to the next bead.

Troubleshooting

Q. My elastic cord keeps breaking — what am I doing wrong?

The most common causes are: tying the knot too tight (which weakens the cord), using cord that's too thin for heavy beads, or not adding jewelry glue to the knot. Try using 0.8mm elastic for most bead sizes and always seal the knot with glue.

Q. My beads won't stay evenly spaced — any tips?

Use a bead board or a folded towel to lay out your design before stringing. For wire designs, add a small crimp bead or knot between beads to keep spacing consistent.
